Spears and Swords
The ancient Greeks used a spear and a sword to hunt. In this mosaic two men are seen hunting and about to kill a lion. In this depiction, they are hunting Lion for fun. The man on the left is supposed to be Alexander the Great, while the man on the right is his companion, Craterus. This is a pebble mosaic created by Alexander's sculptor, Lysippus. It is thought that the mosaic was made around 320 BC. The mosaic is included in the Naturalia category because the mosaic is made up of all pebbles. The scene is supposed to take place in a game park in Syria. This piece at one point was the floor in a luxurious Hellenistic-period house.
Alexander the Great commonly hunted with a spear. He is credited with reinventing the spear. They called it the Sarissa. It was thought to be four to five meters long and was wielded using two hands. It was commonly used during war time; the extra length kept the opposing enemies out of striking distance. The typical spear was also used for hunting. It was common that warriors would hold a spear in one hand and a shield in the other.
